KAMLOOPS — A man who pleaded guilty to luring a child over the internet will spend six months in jail.

Court documents show Justin McGowan was given his sentence yesterday (March 12), along with a two-year probation order. He must register as a sex offender for five years.

Last month, McGowan pleaded guilty to a count of internet luring after paying a young girl in food and cash in exchange for nude photographs.

In September 2018, police received information that McGowan had paid a young girl he met on an app called “Whisper” for nude photographs, according to the Crown prosecutor in the case.

The victim cannot be identified due to a court-ordered publication ban.

Court heard McGowan had been drinking heavily and using cocaine for five days during the offence, and couldn’t remember much of anything.

McGowan had responded to a Whisper post the girl had made, asking her for nudes. She told him no, and said she was 13 years old.

Crown said McGowan then asked if she wanted money in exchange for the photographs, and the girl responded that she just wanted fast food. He ordered some to her house, and later gave her cash as well.

Crown recommended a sentence of 12 to 18 months, but defence lawyer Don Campbell asked for the minimum sentence of six months.
