New look Boogie the Bridge coming to Kamloops in 2019

KAMLOOPS — For 22 years, Boogie the Bridge has given Kamloops residents an opportunity to celebrate movement and the change that comes with it. For almost that long, the RunClub Boogie training has been helping people prepare for the annual fun run.

On Sunday, the annual tradition kicked off once again in our city, but thanks to a big infrastructure project, Boogie the Bridge will have a whole new look for 2019.

What began with 62 walkers and runners back in 1998 has now blossomed into one of Kamloops’ signature events, drawing over 2,800 participants in 2017 and 2018. Boogie the Bridge is just seven weeks away – and on Sunday, the annual RunClub Boogie training clinic kicked off.

“It’s just a wonderful community event that helps people,” Boogie the Bridge Founder Jo Berry explained. “It’s about service above self; it’s about preventative medicine. It’s seen as a little bit of a cult, but actually, it’s just a tribe that really wants to be the healthiest they can be.”

Of course, Boogie wouldn’t be Boogie without the Bridge, but with the planned infrastructure work planned for West Victoria Street in the coming months, organizers knew they’d have to move the event – at least temporarily – to a new location and route.

“We are going to be on the North Shore this year,” Berry told CFJC Today. “We’re still going to boogying on the bridge, but it’ll be over the overpass.”

The usual festivities that surround the actual race – like the vendors and sponsor tents will be located at McDonald Park, where Boogie will start and finish. Longtime RunClub coach and North Shore BIA Executive Director Jeremy Heighton says this is an opportunity for the Shore to shine.

“It’s a crazy weekend, and honestly, McDonald Park is a great jewel on the North Shore,” Heighton said. “It’s a great venue to start and finish Boogie from, and we’re very excited to host.”

If you missed the first RunClub Boogie Training session, there’s still time to sign up. The training clinics can get you from the couch to 5K, 5K to 10K, and even beyond, and run Sunday mornings and Tuesday evenings.

“There’s a pace for everyone, a level for everyone,” Berry said. “If you’re already a runner – I’ve been running for 20+ years injury free…  There’s a way to be an injury-free runner and love it.”
