PAY-TV SUBSCRIBERS CUTTING CABLE AT HIGHER RATES: More and more consumers are cutting the cord. According to a study by Leichtman Research Group, about 2.9 million video subscribers cut the cord, almost doubling the 1.5 million subscribers who nixed cable in 2017. Do you still subscribe to cable?
MALEFICENT 2 RELEASE PUSHED: Disney‘s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, starring Angelina Jolie, has been pushed from its Memorial Day release date in 2020 to October 18th of this year. The sequel will be up against MGM‘s animated The Addams Family and an untitled Blumhouse film. Joachim Ronning is directing the sequel to the $758.5M global grossing 2014 hit.
NETFLIX ADAPTING ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE: Netflix is set to adapt Gabriel Garcia Marquez‘s classic novel One Hundred Years of Solitude. The SVOD service will create a Spanish-language series based on the 1967 novel, which has sold more than 50 million copies. The author’s sons, Rodrigo Garcia and Gonzalo Garcia Barcha, will executive produce.
LEAVING NEVERLAND DRAWS MEGA-AUDIENCE: The two-part documentary Leaving Neverland drew HBO‘s third-biggest audience for a documentary in a decade. The Dan Reed-helmed film features Wade Robson and James Safechuck detailing alleged sexual misconduct at the hands of the late musical icon Michael Jackson. His estate denies the allegations. According to The Hollywood Reporter, part one of Leaving Neverland averaged 1.29 million viewers for its first airing on Sunday night, behind Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief (1.7 million) and Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds (1.6 million).
