KAMLOOPS — Major police investigations throughout 2018 have had an impact on officer health and well-being, according to a year-end report by Kamloops RCMP.

Officer in Charge Supt. Syd Lecky details some of the major investigations over the past year in his report, starting out by saying the most significant investigation has been the homicide of Troy Gold, who was found in the Lac Du Bois area in October.

“This investigation remains very active,” Lecky says.

The report also details several other high-profile incidents in 2018, including a break-in on Badger Drive that eventually led to the arrests of two men in connection to the local drug trade, and a June shooting near TRU that resulted in two people being injured.

It’s also reported that in July, a person involved in the drug trade was “repeatedly” stabbed on a beach on the south shore. This case is still under investigation.

Another aggravated assault is referred to in the report, which involved three men allegedly involved at a stabbing at a Royal Avenue home in August. All three were charged in connection.

In September, there was an officer-involved shooting of a suspect from Alberta, a case that’s still under investigation by the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO). The man died from his injuries, and Lecky says this incident has had a massive impact on officers.

“Members are often faced with very difficult traumatic events during the course of their duties,” Lecky’s report says. “The event which has had the most impact on our members is currently being investigated by the (IIO). While I cannot comment on the investigation itself it is not lost on our members and staff that many have been affected by the event which took place in Rose Hill this past fall.”

Lecky adds that officer wellness has been a key focus for the detachment, and critical incident debriefings have been consistently to support staff and their families.

Correction: Kamloops RCMP’s report and an earlier version of this story stated a July 2018 stabbing occurred on a North Shore beach. Police have now corrected that the stabbing in question was on a south shore beach, and police disclosed the incident at the time.
