Environment Canada issues snowfall warning for Nicola region, Fraser Canyon

MERRITT, B.C. — Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for the southern edges of the province, but forecaster Matt MacDonald says the heavy snowfall could reach up into the Merritt area.

“There’s a band of snow that’s moving up from Washington State into the very southern parts of B.C.,” said MacDonald. “That includes the southern parts of the Fraser Canyon into the southern parts of the Nicola district, and then particularly along Highway 3 over Allison Pass. That’s probably going to be the hardest hit area.”

“Further south of Merritt, they are expecting upwards of 10 centimetres, and for the (Okanagan) Connector, similar amounts up there, about 10 centimetres. Really, as you move further southern reaches of those regions, it could be upwards of 15 centimetres.”

MacDonald says the snowfall should begin after midnight tonight, last through tomorrow morning and taper off in the later afternoon.

“Beyond that, the forecast looks great — lots of sun, but this continued cold weather persisting throughout the week,” said MacDonald.

The forecaster says February has been remarkably cold compared to seasonal norms in the B.C. Interior. That pattern is not likely to change as we head toward the weekend.

“Looking at the month of February, we’ve just seen this consistent cold that hasn’t wanted to flush out of the region with temperatures through February being six to seven degrees below normal,” said MacDonald. “In the coming days, we’ll see temperatures bounce up a little closer to normal during the daytime highs. But the overnight lows are going to stay quite crisp, in the order of -10 C, -12 C.”
