John Legend Gets Hazed

Things took a turn on Friday’s Tonight Show when host Jimmy Fallon enlisted guest John Legend for some “Lip Sync Karaoke,” revealing the song they’d be lip-syncing would be Legend’s own “All of Me” – as sung by an array of random people.

Legend and Fallon couldn’t help cracking up at some of the more painful-sounding amateur vocalists, but one singer left Legend speechless, with soaring vocals that made Legend stop in his tracks and nod his head in approval.

Legend also joined The Roots for a powerful performance of his new single, “Preach.” Before he took the stage, he talked about the single and the events that inspired it with Fallon.

“The message is, you know, a lot of times when we have these crazy tragedies happen in America, like the Parkland shooting, and all these things, you have people [going] ‘I give my thoughts and prayers to this,’. But a lot of times we’re missing action. We’re not really doing anything. This song is about that.”

Legend also discussed his new role on The Voice, divulging that fellow coaches Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine hilariously hazed him during his first day on the job.

“My very first day, we have the blind auditions – you hear somebody you like, you turn around. But each coach has the opportunity to block one person, one other coach. They can only use it once. Every single one of them chose to use it on me! It’s the first time ever that any person was blocked by all three other coaches.”

The next season of The Voice premieres tonight.
