Old barn on Tk’emlups reserve damaged by fire

KAMLOOPS — UPDATE (10:30 a.m.): It’s believed a homeless squatter was behind a fire that damaged a heritage barn on the Tk’emlups reserve Wednesday morning.

The blaze broke out at about 9:45 a.m.

The barn belongs to the family of former Tk’emlups chief Manny Jules, who was on site as Kamloops Fire Rescue crews extinguished the flames.

Jules told CFJC Today the barn was built nearly 100 years ago, and had been in the family for four generations.

He says the family had planned to restore it in the future, as it is one of the few remaining heritage buildings on the reserve, giving it importance to the band.

KFR believes the building will still be salvageable.

EARLIER (10:15 a.m.): Kamloops Fire Rescue have knocked down a fire on the Tk’emlups Reserve Wednesday morning.

Firefighters were called to the property at 1251 Kootenay Way at about 9:45 a.m.

They found an old barn partially on fire.

The initial caller stated the barn was empty, but that hasn’t been confirmed.

It’s not known if anyone was injured.
