UPDATE: Rayleigh house destroyed after morning fire

KAMLOOPS —  Kamloops Fire Rescue has not yet determined the cause of a fire on Monday morning in Rayleigh, but they believe it started in the master bedroom.

Fire crews received the call around 8:30 a.m. at a house fire in the 300 block of Sabiston Court, and when they arrived the house was engulfed, taking hours to put the fire out.

“Due to the long response, unfortunately we were unable to save most of the house,” said KFR fire inspector Kevin Cassidy. “Our North Shore fire hall is the closest full-time fire station to Rayleigh, so it’s a fairly long response from Singh Street fire station out to Rayleigh, so unfortunately we were faced with challenge of fire spread being that much more.”

He added “the majority of the house is completely damaged by fire and water from our crews. They’re just dealing with their insurance company for the rebuild process.”

Fortunately, all four occupants living in the home got out safely, but KFR says it’s another reminder to have all the safety measures in place to prevent such a fire.

“We just want to remind homeowners to be aware of not leaving cooking unattended, don’t leave space heaters running that are unattended,” noted Cassidy. “Be extra careful with smoking materials. Smoke outside. Have working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms. This homeowner was lucky enough to have a working smoke alarm, which alerted her to the fire.”
