KAMLOOPS — City of Kamloops staff are pressing forward with a recommendation to transform the former McArthur Island golf course into a mixed-use recreational property.

In a report coming to Kamloops council in Tuesday’s regular meeting agenda, staff recommend splitting the property between a disc golf course and a nature park.

Council first pursued the mixed-use idea last May, and began working with the Kamloops Disc Golf Club (KDGC) and the Kamloops Naturalist Club (KNC) to develop a plan.

It has been anything but smooth sailing since then, with KNC members balking at the idea of placing passive park space beside active sports space.

KNC has now submitted a plan and drawing for a nine-hole disc golf course.

KDGC would prefer an 18-hole course.

City staff say they have toured eight multi-use parks in BC since May, and the concepts seemed to work well.

In the council report, staff say they met with both clubs earlier this month and proposed three alternate locations in case McArthur Island does not work out for either of them: Skyline Park in Aberdeen, Jimeva Park in Valleyview and Pineview Park in Pineview Valley.

Total cost of transforming the park would be just over $1 million, spent over three phases and three years.

Council will be asked to give staff a direction forward at Tuesday’s meeting, including a potential decision between the larger or smaller disc golf course.
