KAMLOOPS — After nearly 30 years as Executive Director of the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra, Kathy Humphreys is hanging up her hat.

Humphreys joined the KSO in 1990 and says she watched the orchestra and audience grow.

With help from former Music Director, Bruce Dunn, she learned to work with musicians and in 2002, started the Kamloops Symphony Music School.

“We learned along the way, she started out she wasn’t trained in orchestral management, but now she’s a virtual encyclopedia,” Dunn said. “We worked well together. I had certain skills, she had certain skills. Every orchestra needs an administrator who can keep the ship going as it should and she was the one, and she did a fabulous job.”

Humphreys made the decision to step away from the position last fall, saying she would like to take some time for herself and her family.

However, she says she wants to remain engaged in the Kamloops arts scene in some capacity.

“As a community member, maybe I can do some volunteer work, I can definitely attend more of other peoples’ performances, because lots of times I’m a bit worn out from the amount of activity going on with just the symphony,” Humphreys said. “So, that’s going to be a lot of fun.”

While Humphreys is looking forward to having some spare time to pursue different interests, she says she will miss the people involved in keeping the KSO running.

She says everyone, from the musicians to the volunteers and audience members made all of her hard work worth it.

“When I’m there at a performance and the hall is full of people with smiling faces, and they’re all chatting in the lobby about how much they loved the performance and how wonderful the guest artist was and what a great evening they’re having, that’s so rewarding, to know that you’ve brought that kind of joy and happiness to your community,” Humphreys said.

Humphreys will remain in the position of executive director until the end of June.

The search has already begun for Humphrey’s successor.
