Biggest Snubs and Wins from the Oscar Nominations

Jan 23, 2019 | 5:30 AM

While there were many celebrated films this year, there wasn’t an obvious front-runner for Best Picture, so the always eagerly-anticipated Academy Awardsnominations were even more closely watched than usual Tuesday morning.

THE NOMINATIONS

Roma and The Favourite led the pack, with 10 nominations each. A Star Is Born and Vice followed with two apiece. Black Panther nabbed seven nods, and made history as the first comic book movie to be in contention for Best Picture.

Spike Lee‘s BlackKklansman earned six Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, both firsts for Lee.

SNUBS

There were the usual snubs as well. One of the biggest was Bradley Cooper, who got passed over in the directing category for A Star Is Born, which has raked in more than $400M worldwide. As Variety points out, the Academy often skips over successful actor-directors; he joins Barbra Streisand (Yentl), Ben Affleck (Argo) and Angelina Jolie (Unbroken) whose directing work didn’t get recognized.

For acting awards, Timothee Chalamet got skipped for his work in Beautiful Boy. Plus, no actors from Black Panther got nods. Many thought Ethan Hawke was a shoe-in for his critically acclaimed work in First Reformed, but nope. Emily Blunt also got skipped over for her work in Mary Poppins Returns and A Quiet Place.

Damien Chazelle‘s First Man, starring Claire Foy and Ryan Gosling, meanwhile, got shut out completely from the main categories.

The ceremony, which is host-less after Kevin Hart stepped down, will take place on Sunday, Feb. 24 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

As Spike Lee celebrates his first Oscar nominations for Best Director and Best Picture, I’m reminded of the 1989 Oscars, when presenter Kim Basinger went off-book to blast the Academy for snubbing Spike’s DO THE RIGHT THING
