KAMLOOPS — Chimera Theatre’s latest production aims to put the “grim” back into a classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale.

Andrew Cooper talks about ‘The Robber Bridegroom’ on Midday last week:

Artistic Managing Director, Andrew G. Cooper says The Robber Bridegroom, originally written by the Brothers Grimm, is about a father and daughter down on their luck, who are trying to find a marriage suitor to take care of the daughter.

“So they find this guy from out of town, who they don’t know much about, and they start to discover his mysterious dark past,” He explains, “And that’s where the story kind of unfolds from there.”

Cooper says there are a lot of fairy tale elements in the story, however it is not a light, kid-friendly performance.

“I guess what makes it kind of unique is when people fairytales, they do think of a children’s story. And we’re using puppets, which is another thing that people think, ‘Oh puppets, yeah that’s for kids’,” Cooper explains, “Its neither of those things. So its quite dark, its quite violent, its a bit bloody, and its definitely for adults, or for at least 16 (years of age) plus.”

Inspired by Chimera Theatre’s first performance, Untold Tales of the Brothers Grimm, Cooper says this production goes back to their roots, as the theatre group enters into their 5th anniversary.

“And that show was a comedy and it was family friendly. So we thought, well lets go back to the Brothers Grimm thing, but do it so differently.”

The Robber Bridegroom will be running at the Pavilion Theatre from January 23rd to 26th at 7:30 p.m, with a Pay-What-You-Can Matinee on January 26th at 2:00 p.m.

Tickets can be bought online or at Kamloops Live! Box Office.
