TNRD Director calling on provincial government for Yellowhead improvements

VAVENBY, B.C. — Members of the Thompson-Nicola Regional District’s board are calling on the provincial government to review a notorious stretch of highway.

Electoral Area ‘A’ Director Carol Schaffer says along with her, Clearwater Mayor Merlin Blackwell and Area ‘B’ Director Stephen Quinn want the Ministry of Transportation to review the Yellowhead Highway from north of Vavenby to Valemount.

“Because we’ve had a variety of accidents and they’ve landed in the (North Thompson) river or on the side,” Schaffer. “So we wanted the MoT to look into maybe the reason why.”

Schaffer put forth the motion at a board meeting earlier this week, following a number of crashes along the stretch.

These crashes resulted in diesel spills into the North Thompson River that affected users of the intake system.

“We would like to see if the road maintenance is up to standards, because this year… the standards went up a little bit and we want to make sure that they’re up to standard,” she says.

Her biggest concern is the impact on residents when these spills occur.
