KAMLOOPS — A new survey conducted by the group spearheading a movement for a year-round public market in Kamloops shows nearly half of people surveyed aren’t on board with a Riverside Park location.

In a news release, the Kamloops Public Market Co-operative (KPM Co-op) says it conducted a survey over the holiday season to gather public input on the project.

More than 800 people responded to the questions, and KPM Co-op executive director Daphane Nelson says the group is satisfied with the results and received answers from a diverse group.

Of the 827 people surveyed, 368 people were not in favour of the Riverside Park location. Out of that group, 100 were opposed to the project moving forward at all.

The remaining 459 surveyed either provided a positive response or were undecided about the location, although those groups haven’t been separately broken down.

Some issues for residents included impacts the project may have on parking, the Heritage House, and traffic in the area.

“The Kamloops Public Market Co-operative’s next steps are to continue to meet with and engage local business leaders and organizations to take the project from idea to preliminary concept stage,” the release states. “The group is now… beginning to flesh out the details in a development plan.”

The group says that plan will be used to project financials and showcase community support, and it’s expected to be completed by this spring.
