City applying for grant with the hope of better understanding need for childcare spaces

KAMLOOPS — With a growing need for childcare spaces in Kamloops, the city has applied for a $25,000 grant to conduct a study that would look into the current inventory of existing childcare spaces.

Mayor Ken Christian says following the province’s $1 billion investment into child care over three years, Kamloops is hoping to participate in the Community Child Care Planning Program, which is designed to help local governments in developing a community plan for creating more childcare spaces. 

“Child care — it’s not just one lump of services. There’s infant care, there’s family day care, there’s group day care, there’s special needs day care, there’s Montessori day care. There’s [all kinds] of different elements there,” said Christian. “We need to see where there is adequate services in Kamloops and where there’s a requirement for additional services.”
