Closing arguments resume today in case involving Monica Jack of Merritt
VANCOUVER — Closing arguments are set to resume today ( Friday, January 4) in a murder trial for a man who confessed to killing a 12-year-old girl in British Columbia more than 40 years ago.
Garry Handlen has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder but confessed to an officer posing as a crime boss in 2014 that he grabbed the girl while she was riding her bike near Merritt, B-C.
Yesterday, Crown lawyer Gorden Matei said Garry wasn’t a “yes man” who would have admitted to a “horrible crime” that he didn’t commit and that the officer posing as a crime boss in the videotaped confession did not coerce him.
Matei argues Handlen wasn’t dependent on connections he made with members of the supposed organized crime group because he had a partner of 30 years, work that met his financial needs and a wide circle of friends.
