Avalanche danger on the rise in some areas this weekend

VANCOUVER —  Avalanche Canada is warning of extreme danger in the mountains of B-C’s south coast, the Sea to Sky region and Alberta’s Jasper National Park.

The warning says that storms yesterday and today are expected to dump between 60 and 100 centimetres of fresh snow in those areas and may combine with expected heavy rain or wind to create dangerous conditions.

The agency says the conditions will likely cause widespread storm slab avalanches in the Alpine and treeline areas of the Sea to Sky and south coast, and the danger rating extends below the treeline in Jasper.

Avalanche Canada says the extreme rating means that those who use the backcountry should avoid all avalanche terrain and that large, natural or human-triggered avalanches are certain.

So if you’re heading out from Kamloops this weekend to the great beyond, make sure you have all the proper gear, and stay away from the high avalanche areas.
