Snow Angels putting out the call for more volunteers

KAMLOOPS — When the snow falls in Kamloops, volunteers with the Snow Angels program will once again pick up their shovels to help out seniors.

With 200 seniors and people with mobility challenges on the shovelling list, Volunteer Kamloops Snow Angels Coordinator Taylor Rae says the 80 volunteers currently signed up with the program won’t be enough.

“We still need some volunteers, we’ve actually got a couple people up in Rose Hill with no volunteers anywhere near them, so if you’re up there and have been debating going into the program, that would be wonderful. And the North Shore is still in great need for volunteers.”

The program runs all throughout the winter season, and participants do get a reward for their efforts.

“Whenever it snows, volunteers have 24 hours to get out there, shovel the snow, and then they get a free Domino’s pizza,” Rae says. “Domino’s has partnered with us again this year to try and make a benefit for our volunteers.”

Rae adds, the program is not just for helping out the elderly.

“People with mobility or physical issues that would prevent them from being able to shovel their own walkway, so there’s a wide range of clientele,” she explains. “But they’re all low-income, and people without that community support, so the Snow Angels (program) is something that they really rely on.”

Those interested in signing up will need to get a criminal record check, and can apply through their website at www.volunteerkamloops.org.
