TNRD: Semi that crashed into North Thompson spilled roughly 350 litres of fuel

VAVENBY, B.C. — Residents in Vavenby are still without domestic water after a semi truck crashed into the North Thompson River last weekend.

The crash led to a fuel leak north of the Vavenby water system’s intake, and TNRD officials say approximately 350 litres of fuel was released into the river from the vehicle’s tank. TNRD Emergency Operations Centre Information Officer Debbie Sell says this is a rough estimate, calculated by how much diesel fuel was in the tank when the vehicle filled up, how far it had travelled, and how much fuel was estimated to be in the tank at the time of the impact.

The truck has now been removed from the water, and the TNRD says it took daily water samples from the system following the accident, with sampling to continue while residents remain under a “Do Not Use” notice.

Samples are currently being analyzed with results expected late Thursday or early Friday. The regional district is working with Interior Health on the matter, and if results show the water system has not been contaminated, the notice may be rescinded.

While under a “Do Not Use” notice, residents are being reminded that water is not to be used for anything but flushing toilets.

Free bottled and bulk water is available for residents at the Vavenby Fire Department, and the regional district has also made arrangements for users to use the North Thompson Sportsplex shower facilities free of charge.

The hours of operation for the Sportsplex are:

  • January 2nd – 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and then 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 pm
