Operation Red Nose in need of volunteers for New Year’s Eve

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops is ranked first in the province for the number of Operation Red Nose rides provided so far this holiday season, but the designated driving service hasn’t yet reached last year’s total.

Operation Red Nose provides a safe ride home for party goers and their vehicles, accepting donations to PacificSport as payment.

In Kamloops, a little more than 1,000 rides have been provided since the start of the season.

According to coordinator Shanon Guglielmini, that’s 300 fewer than how many rides were provided through the holidays last year.

“We need 300 more rides to beat last year’s numbers,” she said. “So, hopefully we can do that. We’ve got three more nights of service. Tonight (Friday), Saturday and then of course New Year’s Eve, which is our busiest night.”

Operation Red Nose is also putting out the call for more volunteer drivers on New Year’s Eve.

Volunteers will need to have a criminal record check done, so volunteers from previous years are asked to return and help out.

“At this point anyone who volunteered last year and hasn’t volunteered this year, they’ve already gotten their criminal record check done,” Guglielmini said. “And then anybody that’s this year and they don’t have much to do on New Year’s Eve, maybe plans fell through, come on out we’d love to have you for sure.”
