First for Disney’s Jungle Cruise

Disney is introducing its first openly gay character in the upcoming Jungle Cruise movie, and all eyes are on the House of Mouse as they gauge how it handles the sensitive topic.

As it turns out, when Jack Whitehall‘s character McGregor comes out to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson‘s Frank, he doesn’t actually use the word “gay,” TMZreports. Sources tell the site that screenings of the scene have overall been met with open arms, though many have taken notice of the missing word.

The scene is light-hearted, with the pair discussing women and dancing and McGregor tells Frank that his family tried setting him up multiple times to no avail, then explains that his sister Lily (Emily Blunt) is the only one who accepts him no matter who he loves.

Inevitably, Twitter‘s reaction to Disney’s choice is mixed, especially following the kerfluffle over casting a straight actor in a gay role. Though just as many users are equally sick of listening to fans jaw about the controversy. Writes one user, “And that time Daniel Craig played James Bond, and he’s not really a spy.”
