City promotes Waste Wise app as a way to keep track of garbage collection dates

KAMLOOPS — Throughout the Christmas season, families produce a large amount of waste.

The City of Kamloops has an app available for people to figure out when and how to dispose of their garbage and recycling over the holidays.

Over the holidays, the garbage pick-up dates shift to account for the statutory holidays. This can create some confusion as to when to roll out garbage totes.

The city is promoting its Kamloops Waste Wise app for such a time as this.

“With that particular app you can put in your address and get an update exactly when your garbage collection day is,” said Streets and Environmental Services Manager Glen Farrow.

“So, the night before, or the morning of, just please ensure those carts are out before 7:00 a.m. of your collection day, that would be fantastic.”

In addition to telling you when the garbage trucks will be picking up in a particular neighbourhood, the app also maps where to dispose of various products.

“You can search different products,” Farrow said. “Styrofoam, where do I take that product? Where do I take that crinkly plastic? You know, you’re able to search a whole variety of products that aren’t acceptable through curbside collection, but at the depots around town as well.”
