Broadcast Centre empties Toy Houses, fills up Christmas Amalgamated

KAMLOOPS — Wednesday morning, DJ’s from B-100 and CIFM hit the streets to pick up all the toys and non-perishable food items citizens of Kamloops donated over the past month.

Judging by the mountain of toys the jocks dropped off at Christmas Amalgamated this afternoon, the holiday helpers have some significant sorting to do.

“We had a bit of a down year last year, but this year it looks like it’s recovered very well,” Sally Whitson, Christmas Amalgamated organizer explained. “We’ve got all kinds of toys here, and for all different ages. Pretty good looking toys, eh?”

For Chris Roach, CIFM’s new morning show host, the process of picking up the donations was a bit overwhelming for the first-timer.

“I can’t believe how many people are out here,” Roach told CFJC Today as he unloaded toys at Save-On Foods in Sahali. “And the toys themselves. Kids in Kamloops are going to have a good Christmas because people were willing to spend a little extra money.”

With the big day fast approaching, Christmas Amalgamated has already handed out most of the toys they’ll provide families in need over the holiday season; Whitson says these toys will help fill the need next year before the majority of the donations begin rolling in.

“There’s absolutely no way we’d have enough toys to begin without the Toy Houses,” Sally said. “There are so many people that can’t get to us with their toys and it’s so much more convenient to be able to pick up a toy, drop it off in the Toy House wherever you happen to be, and not have to come across town.”
