KAMLOOPS — As holiday travel ramps up, drivers are being advised to take precautions before heading onto the roads.

A winter storm warning is in effect for the Coquihalla Highway between Hope and Merritt, and Environment Canada meteorologist Bobby Sekhon says tonight is not the best time to travel the road.

“We’re expecting the bulk of the snowfall to actually fall tonight over the Coquihalla, and we can see up to 20 to 30 centimetres by Friday morning,” Sekhon says. “Definitely for everybody travelling on the Coquihalla, tonight is not a great time to be travelling there. There will also be winds, quite gusty winds as well so visibility will be poor and snow will be heavy tonight.”

Those winds are expected to gust up to 80 kilometres per hour this afternoon, and high winds will also make their way to Kamloops, Sekhon says.
