KAMLOOPS — Local families in need will soon have access to a real Christmas meal, as the Salvation Army begins handing out food hampers put together with the help of Kamloops Honda.

The holiday season partnership between the two organizations has been going on for over 10 years, and according to Major Paul Trickett, this year even more families will benefit.

“We are just so excited today (Dec.13) because we were expecting 50 hampers to be handing out to families, and they’ve given us 75 this year,” he explains, “so 25 extra families are just going to be absolutely blessed this Christmas.”

Combined with the hampers already put together by the Kamloops Salvation Army, Trickett says they’ll be giving out over 100 food baskets.

“If every agency, and every business did this kind of thing, there would be zero people that go in need at Christmas time in this city.”

Don Fleming, a sales consultant with Kamloops Honda, says staff raised around $7,000 to put together the baskets, which include enough food to cover a whole day’s worth of meals for Christmas time.

“What we do is we take donations from the staff all year long, some people off their paycheques, sales guys, so much per car they sell, it happens all year long,” he explains, “so it gives everybody a really warm and fuzzy feeling, and we’re so happy that we can give back into the community that supports us so strongly.”

Starting tomorrow, volunteers with the Salvation Army will give out the food hampers to families throughout Kamloops.
