Kamloops-Thompson School District to pilot a change in student reporting

“We wanted to wait for the official pilot to be put forward, so that we had some structures, some parameters,” said Director of Instruction Lisa Carson. “Also, so that we had a voice. If we were going to participate in a new style of reporting we wanted to ensure that what we did could be communicated back effectively and with purpose back to government.”

School District 73 has been holding a series of meetings with teachers to determine which classes will participate in the pilot and what the new structure might be.

Communication will go out to parents about how the district intends to report in January.

The hope is that a more descriptive reporting format would provide more in-depth information on student progress.

“If we were able to describe what a developing student’s profile looks like for a particular subject area would that give better information,” Carson said. “If we said a child was proficient and gave a description of what proficient meant would that be a better way to communicate than saying a ‘B’ or ‘A’.”
