A Modern Love Story

To outsiders, it seems like soon-to-be newlyweds Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas just met. But to them, their love story has been in the works for ages.

The lovebirds sat down with Vogue for a cover story that, for the first time, provided eager fans with a glimpse into their relationship. Nick, 26, recalls kneeling in front of Priyanka, 36, the first time they met (at last year’s Vanity Fair‘s Oscar party).

“I put my drink down, got on one knee – this is in front of a bunch of people – and I say, ‘You’re real. Where have you been all my life?’ Like, loud,” he tells the magazine.

And while they went home together, the night ended with them squarely in the friend zone. “We hung out for a couple of hours. He patted my back before he left,” she says.

Nick adds: “She’s still upset about that. Your mom was in the house! I thought it was a respectful first night.”

After some back-and-forth, he scored her number. Nick’s brother Joe (who is engaged to Sophie Turner), tells Vogue: “I think she kind of knocked him off his feet. He was just this little puppy dog.”

Nick admits: “She walks into the Chateau, and I feel an overwhelming sense of peace and understanding about this next chapter of my life.” After their third date he told his mother he would marry her.

Priyanka says she loved the way he loves her from the get go: “As a girl, I’ve never had a guy tell me, ‘I like your ambition.’ It’s always been the opposite.”

THE ENGAGEMENT

Nick popped the question on vacation in Crete, where they were celebrating her birthday. “I got down on one knee, again, and I said, ‘Will you make me the happiest man in the world and marry me?’” he says. “No joke – she took about 45 seconds. Forty-five seconds of silence.”

Separately, Us Weekly reports that while Priyanka and Meghan Markle remain close friends, Meghan and Prince Harry will not attend their wedding in India. The pregnant Meghan is staying close to home these days, and missed out on joining Harry’s recent trip to Zambia.
