Kamloops postal workers feel Liberals not listening with back-to-work legislation

“It’s business as usual, although we’re very unhappy with the back-to-work legislation done in the House of Commons and the Senate. We feel they’re not listening to the health and safety aspect,” says local CUPW President Kellie Horncastle. “We understand the small businesses and the impact that it has and we also understand it’s a big financial impact on our members as well. But our health and safety is the most important thing right now.”

Horncastle says she’s worried about mounting injuries to postal workers in Kamloops. She says while members can’t voice their concerns through job action anymore, they will make a statement by cutting back on any overtime that’s asked of them.

“We are going to still participate in the no forced overtime, doing no overtime, so eight-hour days,” notes Horncastle. “I feel that if [Prime Minister Justin] Trudeau actually sits down and negotiates with Canada Post and the union that we may be able to come to some kind of compromise regarding doing our own overtime on our own routes.”

The vote on Monday evening in the Senate passed by a margin of 53 to 25.
