Kamloops resident taken for $18,000 in internet scam
KAMLOOPS — Police say another internet scam has taken a Kamloops resident for roughly $18,000.
In a news release, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says a few months ago, the victim’s computer “froze” resulting in a ‘Microsoft Alert’ which requested funds to fix the issue.
The victim provided their credit card number to the software company “NAVSAM Systems Ltd.” who made multiple charges to their credit card.
Recently, another ‘Microsoft Alert’ popped up on the victim’s computer, which stated that their firewall had crashed and additional funds were required to resolve. The victim became suspicious and contacted the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, which advised that this was a scam.
