Merritt Search and Rescue out $8000 after weekend breakins

MERRITT — Emergency equipment used to save lives took a hit in Merritt over the weekend.

Two breakins on back to back nights  resulted in gear worth thousands of dollars being stolen from a Nicola Valley Search and Rescue compound near the Merritt airport.

President Saxon Peters says the first breakin occurred Friday night, the second on Saturday night. 

The group’s Facebook page has a message indicating that things like search and rescue jackets, personal flotation devices, a computer and a television were among the items stolen. 

A lot of the stolen items were found Sunday in a ditch nearby, but apparently other expensive equipment is still missing.

That missing equipment is worth $8,000.

If there had been any serious emergency, the group’s command vehicle wouldn’t have been operational because of the missing items, although some of those items have since been replaced.
