KAMLOOPS — The B.C. Trucking Association is almost entirely on board with new regulations for commercial vehicles on the Coquihalla — except for one major concern.

The provincial government announced yesterday (Nov. 14) that new regulations would bar commercial vehicles from using the left lane on the Coquihalla Highway between Box Canyon and Zopkios.

Dave Earle is the President and CEO of the association, and says members are all for enhanced safety on the road, but he’s concerned about commercial drivers not properly applying chains when required.

“They certainly are. The only worry we have is if you’ve got that one bad apple as you say, they’ll be holding up literally dozens and dozens of commercial vehicles. So we really want to see the ministry step up enforcement.”

The affected stretch of the highway is part of a pilot project that could expand to more Interior routes.

Earle emphasizes he wants more stringent enforcement by the province to ensure drivers are chaining up properly.

“Our members are primarily concerned with safety on the roads, so any improvement to address issues that happen particularly during inclement weather we welcome. This particular issue we are hoping that government will also embark on a more stringent enforcement regime for chaining up. Our members, like every motorist, are very frustrated when the highway is closed due to commercial vehicles not properly applying chains when required.”
