Community members encouraged to voice opinions on Westwold Elementary

WESTWOLD, B.C. — The superintendent of School District 73 is optimistic that this isn’t the end of the story for Westwold Elementary School.

The rural school southeast of Kamloops has been closed ever since no students showed up on the first day of the 2018 school year, and the fate of the institution could soon be decided. Superintendent Alison Sidow says even if a decision is made to close Westwold Elementary, it might not be a permanent solution.

“Even if the board makes the decision based on the recommendation from staff to close Westwold Elementary, it doesn’t preclude us in the future from reopening the school,” Sidow says. “Boards can open schools and they can close schools. A closure doesn’t necessarily mean that that is the end of the story for Westwold.”

Last month the school district’s outgoing board of education recommended moving forward with a public consultation regarding the future of the school, and the meeting is expected to be held on Nov. 22 at 7:00 p.m. at Westwold Elementary.

“We want to hear from families in the community, and from other stakeholder groups including our employee groups to determine how they see us moving forward,” Sidow says. “If, for instance, the enrolment or the birth rate looks like it may be trending up and families are committing to returning, that might impact the final decision. However, if families don’t see the school as a place that they’d like to take their kids currently because of personal reasons or because they feel there are better offerings at other schools, then we’ll need to take that into consideration.”

Sidow is hoping those who have a vested interest in keeping the school open will voice their opinions, and community members are encouraged to submit petitions and comments on the future of the school before the meeting. She adds that sufficient public consultation must take place before staff make a recommendation to the board.

“We’ll get a better sense of (a timeline) after we’ve met with the community, but it could be that as early as the new year we are making a decision about the future of Westwold Elementary.

“It’s our strong desire to have a school in every rural community, and so we really do need to hear from families about how they see the future unfolding and what they expect for the future of their children in Westwold.”
