KamCon aiming to bring gaming community together

KAMLOOPS — Two Kamloops men are hoping their new convention will bring the whole gaming community together.

Tyler Carpentier is the organizer of KamCon, a gaming event running from tomorrow until Sunday at Thompson Rivers University.

“We know that the gaming community is pretty strong here in Kamloops,” Carpentier says. “There’s a number of stores that are supported by that same community. We know that it’s growing quite a bit as well. In those stores, you’re seeing a lot more space being dedicated to table top games, and role playing games, because the demand is there.”

Carpentier and his business partner Julien felt that the community was underserved and that there was space for a convention here in Kamloops. A little more than a year ago, the pair started researching and figuring out what it would take to put on a convention.

“It was probably about eight or nine months ago we decided to pull the trigger and do what we could to make it happen,” Carpentier says.

A big focus of the convention is to help people that want to get into games or have been curious about what’s involved and want to give it a try.

“We’ve got workshops for people that want to learn how to play, we’ve got workshops for people that want to learn how to run games, we’ve got workshops around crafting related to the games,” Carpentier says.

There will be a large selection of board games, role playing games and virtual reality games at the convention. Presenters will also host panels which will include YouTube creators, writers and comedians.

Carpentier is hoping KamCon will become an annual event.

“We really want to bring the gaming community together. A lot of the table top gaming and role playing gaming community kind of get stuck around their own groups, and around their own tables,” Carpentier says. “That’s a big part of why we did this, is to try to give the gaming community a place to come together at least once a year and kind of celebrate our geekdom, and find a way to just network and meet more people.”

Tickets can be bought at the door, at High Octane Comics, or at www.kamloopsconvention.ca.
