Dozens line up in Kamloops for province’s first legal pot store

There are roughly 85 dried-flower strains of cannabis and a selection of oils, capsules and pre-rolls available for purchase at the store. Aside from the initial excitement surrounding BC’s first legal recreational marijuana store, City of Kamloops Business Licence Inspector and Property Use Coordinator Dave Jones says he thinks this new industry will help boost local economy.

“We’re the forerunners of a cannabis store that’s run and looked after by the province of British Columbia, to set an example of how cannabis can be fit in to our society,” Jones says. “The store has employed a number of employees with good paying jobs, obviously it’s only one store of potentially maybe three in town. There’s a potential of 15 other private stores, so obviously it’s going to help the economy, obviously people want to come and work in that industry, and it’s a great business opportunity for entrepreneurs.”

Jones was excited about this morning’s turnout at the store, with people coming from across the province and even across the border to come see the facility.

“We have actually three individuals right from California,” he says. “So they made a long trip to come here, they’re in the industry and they rolled their product out in Toronto and they’re here. Their product is showcased in the store, they’re here to support growth.”

Jones praised the work of the provincial government, along with city staff and council to get to this point.
