KAMLOOPS — A full software engineering degree program has been rolled out at Thompson Rivers University.

Today, local media were invited to meet its first students.

About 20 students are currently enrolled in the program. Previously, students wishing to obtain a degree in software engineering could begin the program at TRU, but would have to transfer elsewhere to complete it.

Now, students can complete their full education in Kamloops.

“The cost of living obviously staying in Kamloops is way lower than the larger cities, and I think having the program in the lower cities will enable us to build the knowledge centres in the small communities as well. And, this will help the students to get a quality education at their doorsteps,” said Dr. Faheem Ahmed, chair of the program.

The program requires five years of study, which includes a one-year co-op program when students get work experience in their field of study.

As the tech industry grows in Kamloops, students from the area are hoping to be able to secure positions locally upon graduation.

“I’m really excited to be a part of this,” said student Lorelei Guidos. “It’s really nice to be able to develop its tech sector, because ultimately there’s going to be a lot more jobs here, and now if we go to school here we can end up working here.”
