Kamloops drivers putting winter tires on earlier: Integra Tire

KAMLOOPS — Every half an hour, a vehicle comes through the shop at Integra Tire to get a simple tire changeover. It’s been like that since mid-September, well before the first official day when proper winter tires are required on B.C. highways.

“The trend’s definitely getting earlier every year,” said owner of the Integra Tire shop on Notre Dame Drive Alan Hay, who added he changed over some people’s tires in late August. “People aren’t willing to wait anymore until the snow hits the ground to get their winters on. It’s a good thing. People are a little bit more safety conscious.”

Rick Ewen is among that group, not wanting to wait to get his winter tires on this year.

“The summer tires were almost wore right out and there’s talk of snow all around the mountains and I’m gone for the week, so got to make sure the little guy and wife are taken care of,” he said.

Ewen hopes this encourages others to avoid waiting to get their tires changed over with snow in the forecast in Kamloops and on the Coquihalla as early as Tuesday.

Legally as of Oct. 1, drivers can get away with either a tire with the ‘snowflake in a mountain’ logo or ‘M+S’ symbol. However, for people in the market for new tires, Integra Tire recommends people spend the extra money and get the safest set of tires they can.

“We’re still a big believer in traditional winters,” noted Hay. “Something with a soft compound. There are all-weather tires out there that have a snowflake rating, but you’re still going to be the safest with an actual winter tire.”

Integra Tire is booking into next week, not a bad time frame, given some other shops in Kamloops are scheduling closer to the end of October.
