Provincial Finance Committee makes Kamloops pit stop

KAMLOOPS — If you’d like to give the provincial government feedback on how it spends your tax dollars, tonight’s your chance in Kamloops.

The all-party Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services will be at Thompson Rivers University tonight from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Alpine Room.

Kamloops-North Thompson Liberal MLA Peter Milobar is a committee member and says there’s a similarity to the issues province-wide.

“Certainly a discussion around student unions and the cost of post-secondary education or student loans; the cost of those with interest,” he says. “Health care issues come to the fore and then you get into localized transportation and K-12 educational discussions as well.”

So, what does the committee do with the feedback?

“We get together as a committee and we go through it and we eventually come up with a report that we present to the legislature and the finance minister.”

Last year, Milobar says 119 recommendations were made and though few are ever acted on, he still encourages people to come out and share their views.

“Very few do get actioned on if you look at the history of this. But I think it’s an important process for people to still feel engaged and have that face-to-face contact.”

The consultations kicked off in Dawson Creek last week and wrap up Oct. 9 on Vancouver Island.
