Green Party supports move to limit rent increases to cost of inflation

VICTORIA — Green Party Leader Andrew Weaver is urging the province to adopt a task force recommendation that rental hikes be tied only to inflation.
The Rental Housing Task Force is calling on the province to scrap the current model of inflation plus a two per cent hike, which has been in place since 2004.
The change would drop the scheduled maximum rent increase for next year to 2.5 per cent — the rate of inflation — from the 4.5 per cent.
Weaver says the recommendation is a strong step toward addressing current and ongoing rental affordability.
