Kamloops Kidney Walk raises funds, champions awareness of organ transplants

The events included a silent auction as well as a pancake breakfast to help raise much-needed funds for the Kidney Foundation of Canada.

Margaret Thompson received her kidney transplant in 2011 and works with those who are waiting for an organ transplant.

“It brings more awareness to the community. The need for sponsorship, thinking about donating your organs when you pass away or donating while you’re living – they have the pair transplant now. It’s really important to get those messages out to the community,” said Thompson.

Before her transplant, Thompson says her everyday life was a struggle.

She lacked energy and had regular dialysis appointments. But after her transplant, she says her life is so much better.

“Big time. It was probably about three weeks, and by four weeks, I was driving my car. It just brings you to life again,” said Thompson.

More than $20,000 was raised at this year’s walk, with more donations being tallied.
