Enrollment increases in Kamloops-Thompson School District

KAMLOOPS — The preliminary numbers are in, and the Kamloops-Thompson School District is reporting an increase in students enrollment over last year.

Growth of 1.5 per cent or 132 students is being reported at the elementary level in kindergarten, primary Grades 1 to 3 and intermediate Grades 4 to 7, which is very close to what the district had projected for this year. The district is experiencing enrollment pressures in the Westsyde area, the Valleyview corridor, and the Southwest sector, but the increase still comes as welcome news.

“We know the birth rates 5 years ago, so we project about 1,053 kindergarten students of which all but 16 showed up, so we were about 98 per cent accurate there, and we had an increase of about 132 students in K-7,” says Rob Schoen, Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Schools. “As much as they’re preliminary, they’re pretty accurate and that means we’re adding a few teachers as well, to Pacific Way, McGowan Park, Arthur Hatton, Raft River, Sun Peaks and Marion Schilling.”
