One and done for Mund as Vernon mayor

VERNON, B.C. — One term as Vernon mayor is enough for Akbal Mund.

Mund has announced he won’t be seeking re-election as mayor, but will run for one of the six councillor positions.

“The major reason I don’t want to run for mayor…it is a full time job. My kids are now at the age where they are 12 and 14 almost here, and that’s the best time of their lives. And after they turn 18, they’re gone,” Mund told media members at City Hall.

Mund, a former owner of Wendy’s Restaurants in the Interior, says the position does come with a huge time commitment.

“It’s not a job where you come in 8 to 5. The job continues long after. It’s probably like being a CEO of a business where you’re phone is basically attached to you.”

Mund says he is running for council to ensure there is some continuity.

“And also the expectations that we continue to work with all the individuals that exist in our community to continue to solve the problems of homelessness, development, and any other issues that people want, but do it on a logical basis.”

Mund isn’t endorsing any of the four current candidates for mayor.

“Let them do their battle, and maybe as things go along, let’s see how it works out, and I’ll come out and endorse people.”

However,  the soon to be former mayor is supporting Teresa Durning in her run for councillor, saying she’s done an excellent job managing the City’s Visitor Info Centre.

“I hope she gets on council because I really like her. She makes good, sound decisions because I’ve seen her in action. And I think you’ve all noticed that tourism has grown immensely in this community.”

As of today, three people have filed papers to run for councillor: Kelly Fehr, Brian Quiring and Don Jefcoat, while Art Gourley is the lone person to file for  mayor.

The others who have said they will run for mayor are Victor Cumming, Darrin Taylor and Erik Olesen.
