KAMLOOPS — There will be another indoor option for Kamloops residents looking to escape from the wildfire smoke prior to the start of school next week.

The City of Kamloops is opening up the Canada Games Aquatic Centre five days ahead of schedule, starting Thursday.

“We’ve managed to get our maintenance done prior to Sept. 4 and so it’s going to allow us to open the pool from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. every day starting tomorrow,” says Sean Smith, business operations and events supervisor with the city.

He adds the poor air quality played a role in the city’s ability to reopen.

“The air quality and smoke in the air has definitely caused us to review what we’re making available to the citizens and the residents,” he says. “And ironically, with the wildfire closing the pool at Brock and the river, what that did was allow us to reallocate those staff resources to the maintenance at the Canada Games Pool, which allowed us to get the work done ahead of time.”

Smith says the pool will be closed on Labour Day but will reopen to its regular business hours on Tuesday.
