KAMLOOPS — The B.C. Coroners Service is investigating the death of a man who was severely injured after being hit with a longboard in Kamloops five years ago.

Michael Forry sustained a severe brain injury in March, 2013 outside of the Brocklehurst 7-Eleven store.

Forry had confronted a group of teens about their behaviour, and during the confrontation, one of the teens struck him in the head with a longboard.

The attack left Forry in a coma for more than three weeks, and caused permanent brain damage.

The boy, who was 15 years old at the time, was convicted but avoided jail time for the assault, receiving a sentence of two years’ probation.

On social media, Forry’s mother has confirmed he passed away earlier this month.

While the Coroners Service wouldn’t confirm an identity, spokesman Andy Watson says the service is investigating the August 15 death in Squamish of a man in his 50s.

It’s not yet known if Forry’s death was a result of his brain injury.

In a statement to CFJC Today, the B.C. Prosecution Service says Forry’s attacker, who was can’t be named because he was a minor at the time, won’t be tried again.

“The B.C. Prosecution Service does not anticipate any additional charges in relation to the 2013 assault on Mr. Forry,” said spokesperson Alicia Adams in an emailed statement. “A young person pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in relation to that incident and could not be tried again in these circumstances.”

Forry’s mother declined to speak to CFJC Today.

In April of this year, Forry posted a lengthy video to Youtube describing his struggles since the attack.

In the video, Forry claims none of his medical expenses have been covered, apparently because of his part in the initial altercation.

Forry connects the lack of support and the fallout from his injuries to the erosion of his relationship with his daughter.
