KAMLOOPS — Some peace of mind for students and parents at Westmount Elementary.

The Kamloops-Thompson School District has confirmed safety improvements to the student drop-off area at the school will be completed in time for the first day of school.

The improvements, made in partnership with the City of Kamloops, include:

  • The installation of a traffic signal at the intersection of Westsyde Road and Walkem Road to better service traffic exiting Walkem Road
  • Improving a vehicle drop-off lane at the school to accommodate several vehicles at a time
  • Safety improvements at the bus stop on Westsyde Road near the school, by increasing the size of the waiting pad and installing roadside barriers to better separate the bus stop from Westsyde Road
  • The development of a crossing guard program at the school that will see more SD73 staff outside during busy periods to monitor key crossing areas

“Yes, the updates to the Westmount parking lot will be done,” says Superintendent Alison Sidow. “We’re just in the final stages of completing that. Again, we’re really pleased that we’ve been able to work well with the city. So, it does look like things will be ready to go September 4 and we should see a significant improvement in the traffic flow and hence the safety for students as they move to and from school in the Westmount area.”

The call for improvements was brought forward by parents in the area last January. The school district struck a safety committee after a close call involving a student and a vehicle.
