KAMLOOPS — A member of the provincial Green party caucus was in the city speaking to members of the community on Saturday, and took part in the pride parade Sunday.

Adam Olsen, MLA for Saanich North and the Islands, held a community forum in Kamloops on Saturday night, to speak with members of the public about a wide variety of topics, including the Green party’s last year in government collaborating with the NDP, as well as the upcoming referendum on electoral reform.

“We have a responsibility to British Columbians to form a government, to govern, to public policy forward, thoughtful public policy. That’s what we’ve been doing,” Olsen told CFJC Today. “One of the main criticisms of minority governments is that they don’t work together, people don’t work together… but the BC NDP and BC Greens have focused on our common ground and we’ve built our relationship on that.”

The Greens have stated they believe communities like Kamloops are places they can make inroads in the future, evidenced by the fact both Green party candidates garnered over 20 per cent of the votes in both Kamloops ridings in May 2017’s provincial election. Olsen says he believes his party will continue to gain momentum as they move towards the next provincial election, slated for 2021.

“We’ve heard from a lot of people who live outside the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island that we need to get into their communities, and that’s what we’re doing,” Olsen said. “I think our values align very much with the values of people that live in rural British Columbia… the forestry practices, the wildfires, these are devastating to rural BC and they’re the issues we’ve been talking about.”
