SD73 hoping for more government money for building expansions

KAMLOOPS — With the start of the new school year less than two weeks away, the Kamloops-Thompson School District is once again looking to Victoria for help when it comes to desperately needed infrastructure upgrades.

Superintendent Alison Sidow says enrolment reports indicate the district has 187 more students than it did last year, bringing total enrolment to just over 14,300 students. She says the increased enrolment has placed significant pressure on some facilities in the district, particularly Valleyview Secondary and Westmount Elementary schools.

An expansion at Valleyview, which is at 140 per cent student capacity, seems most plausible in the short term, considering B.C.’s Ministry of Education asked the district in April for a detailed project plan for a $22 million expansion at the school.

“Well, we did get very positive indicators from the Ministry of Education,” Sidow tells CFJC Today. “We were asked for a project development report, which is the first stage in the process before an announcement. So, we are keeping our fingers crossed. We’re working closely with the ministry and we are hopeful that there could be an announcement some time in the New Year.”

Even if the funding for an expansion for Valleyview Secondary School comes through though, she says an expansion is also needed at Westmount along with a new school in Pineview Valley.

And though she feels the needs of the district are lagging behind other districts, she understands the government must prioritize needs across all 60 districts in B.C. as it is “managing multiple challenges with enrolment growth across the province.”

However despite the need for upgrades, Sidow says the district completed a tremendous amount of infrastructure work over the summer totaling $3.5 million dollars.

Some of that work included new chain fencing at Kamloops School of the Arts and significant upgrades to the parking lot at Westmount Elementary plus four new portables in the district.

Other examples include:

  • Installation of new water fountains at all schools, approximately $140,000
  • Roof replacement at Logan Lake Elementary, approximately $420,000
  • Roof replacement at Barriere Elementary, approximately $440,000
  • Paving upgrade at Westsyde Secondary, approximately $300,000
  • Woodshop dust collection replacement at Sa-Hali Secondary, approximately $475,000
  • Woodshop dust collection replacement at Westsyde Secondary, approximately $425,000
