Red Cross appeals for funds to help B.C. wildfire evacuees

KAMLOOPS — The Canadian Red Cross has launched an appeal for funds to help those displaced by this year’s B.C. wildfires.

The agency says help is needed in the present, but also in the months ahead as evacuees return home.

B.C. region vice-president Kimberley Nemrava says donations will go to help the more than 3,000 people already driven from their homes by the flames.

“In this case, the money would be used initially to support people re-entering their communities, and then to support them in early recovery,” says Nemrava.

While this year’s fire season is not affecting as many people as the record 2017 season, Nemrava says the number of evacuees is growing seemingly by the day.

“We monitor these situations very closely, and with the duration of this event and the number of people affected now, we are asking for the public’s help in having some funding available to support these people on their early recovery journey,” says Nemrava.
