BC Wildfire Service urges caution in the backcountry this long weekend

KAMLOOPS — Be careful if you plan on heading into the backcountry this BC Day long weekend.

The BC Wildfire Service says there are over 450 wildfires burning in B.C. and Fire Information Officer Kyla Fraser urges members of the public to exercise caution.

“Please be careful outdoors and avoid any activity that can cause a wildfire. Human-caused wildfires are totally preventable and they divert our resources from lightning-caused fires.”

She says the Snowy Mountain wildfire 14 kilometres south of Keremeos remains the largest fire of note in the province at over 6,500 hectares in size.

Closer to home, the Monte Creek continues to be mapped at 60 hectares in size while the Montana Forest Service Road fire near Vavenby remains at 35 hectares in size.

So, what’s the outlook?

“Given the amount of fires that we’re seeing right now, things are actually looking pretty good. We are bracing ourselves for some more significant fires to pop up over the weekend,” says Fraser.

“But luckily most of the fires we’re seeing right now are burning in remote areas. There are definitely some communities that have been impacted. There’s a few evacuation orders and alerts in place, but yeah, we’re just continuing to prioritize and respond to fires.”
