AMC’S MOVIE TICKET PROGRAM THRIVING AS MOVIEPASS STRUGGLES: MoviePass is having a tough time making the movie ticket subscription program profitable, but AMC Theatres is ready to give it a whirl. The company announced that in the first five weeks of service, AMC Stubs A-List has enrolled 175K+ members. This comes a day after MoviePass revealed its $9.99 service would no longer cover blockbuster movies. Crowed Adam Aron, AMC CEO and president:
“We are nothing less than ecstatic about the early consumer response to AMC Stubs A-List, which encourages moviegoers to come to the theatre more often, bringing their family and friends with them. With more than 175,000 members enrolled in just five weeks, the growth of AMC Stubs A-List has far exceeded our projections. We also find it reassuring that we consciously designed AMC Stubs A-List to be a profitable program with a price point that is loaded with consumer value while also being sustainable for us and for our guests.”
REFINERY29 TEAMS UP WITH NEON: Digital media company Refinery29 is expanding into feature films via a partnership with Neon, the studio behind I,Tonya, Ingrid Goes West, and Three Identical Strangers. The deal has the companies finding and distributing projects “that align with both companies’ missions to work with rule-defying storytellers that continue to challenge the audience.” First up is Assassination Nation and Little Woods. Assassination Nation will bow September 21, and is directed by Sam Levinson. The film stars Hari Nef, Odessa Young, Suki Waterhouse, along with Bella Thorne and Maude Apatow. Little Woods, winner of the Tribeca Film Festival‘s Nora Ephron Award, is written and directed by Nia DaCosta, and stars Tessa Thompson and Lily James.
TILDA SWINTON NARRATES DOC ABOUT WOMEN DIRECTORS: Among Venice’s documentary line-up is Mark Cousins‘ Women Make Film: A New Road Movie Through Cinema. More details are emerging about the 16-hour documentary. The first four hours will debut at Venice and will be narrated by Tilda Swinton. The film, which celebrates women in film, was four years in the making and is still being produced. It is expected to bow in spring of 2019.
