Smoky skies bulletin extended for Kamloops, though air quality improving

KAMLOOPS — The Ministry of Environment has extended its smoky skies bullletin for much of the province, including Kamloops.

“We continue to see this high level haze across much of the Interior and it’s due to long range transport of smoke from distant fires as far away as Eurasia,” says Air Quality Meteorologist Earle Plain.

“But that smoke is combined with fire activity in the Yukon and Alaska. We’re probably half way to our air quality objective though we occasionally see spikes in the evening and early morning hours.”

Thankfully, however, he expects things to improve soon.

“The high pressure system that has been dominating the weather patterns for the last week or so, it has shifted to the east which is good news. It means we’ll start to see more of a westerly flow. So, more of that marine air off the Pacific pushing on shore and that should bring us cleaner skies.”

“People respond differently to different levels of smoke. The biggie for people who are in generally good health and are out exercising is if you start to feel a tightness in your chest or other health effects, to back off.”
